'Skating Rink'
aired Saturday November 22, 2003.As part of the Molson Canadian
Heritage Classic Hockey Game
One of the most anticipated NHL games of 2003 took place on Saturday, November 22, at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton,
Alberta. Included in the schedule was the NHL's first ever, regular season, outdoor hockey game between the Edmonton
Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens. The day's events also included a mega stars alumni game with hockey greats Wayne
Gretzky, Grant Fuhr, Glenn Anderson, Paul Coffey, Guy Lafleur, Guy Carbonneau, Guy Lapointe and Larry Robinson
in the line-up.
Well, David isn't a hockey great but he sure loves the game
and was thrilled to learn that his song would air during this very special occasion. What an amazing event to be
a part of!
CBC put together a montage of the day's events with added scenes
of small outdoor rinks and images of hockey greats (including Wayne Gretzky's smiling face) while "Skating
Rink" played in the background. This was an historic event for hockey fans everywhere, and for one huge fan
in particular...David!
A word from Wayne Gretzky about the
event
"My family immigrated to Canada from Ayrshire, Scotland. Ever since my first introduction to hockey in the
Sixties, I've loved the game. I would watch "Hockey Night in Canada" with my father and would play ball
hockey until the streetlights came on." -David Francey

Skating Rink - Lyrics
The music from the skating rink
Drifts across the town
The stars of heaven high above
Forever looking down
I stand here looking upward,
And I'm listening to the sound
Of the village in the lonely heart of winter
The lights above the skating rink
Illuminate the scene
And on the snow the shadows show
Footsteps where we've been
And Danny's breath hangs motionless
Hovers like a dream
Above his head, in the lonely heart of winter
The sky above the skating rink
The blackened weight of space
Falls endless on the frozen world
Upon the saving grace
Of the lights around the skating rink
Laughing in the face
Of the darkness at the lonely heart of winter
