Lyrics and Liner Notes - Order Late Edition Now!

"Many of the songs recorded here reflect my reaction to news– personal news, local news and world events.  It was a great pleasure to work with my good friends Kieran, Fats, Richard and Lucas. This album was recorded live off the floor atMoraine Studios in Nashville. Theexperience was exhilarating and immediate.
I hope that comes through when you listen to
“Late Edition."

1.Yesterday’s News (David Francey) 3:13 Lyrics

Lead and backing vocals: David Francey
Octave mandolin, backing vocals: Kieran Kane
Electric guitar: Richard Bennett
Fiddle: Fats Kaplin
Drums: Lucas Kane

I was loading up the woodstove one morning, consigning the previous day’s paper to the flames, and thought of Time’s merciful relegation of all our hurts and troubles to the past.

2. Pretty Jackals (David Francey) 2:18 Lyrics

Vocals: David Francey
Guitar, backing vocals: Kieran Kane
Bouzouki: Richard Bennett
Fiddle: Fats Kaplin
Drums: Lucas Kane

A comment on the way the TV news is sometimes presented, a weird blend of reality and fiction.

3. Solitary Wave (David Francey and Kieran Kane) 2:48 Lyrics

Vocals: David Francey
Banjo, backing vocals: Kieran Kane
Electric guitar: Richard Bennett
Fiddle: Fats Kaplin
Drums: Lucas Kane

I co-wrote this with Kieran Kane, at his cabin in New York State. The lake was a mirror that day, in every way.

4. When I’m Not Thinking About You (Kieran Kane/David Francey) 2:38 Lyrics

Vocals: David Francey
Banjo, backing vocals: Kieran Kane
Guitar: Richard Bennett
Fiddle: Fats Kaplin
Drums: Lucas Kane

I wanted to do a duet with Kieran and this co-write seemed like the one.  We’d both experienced being on this end of love first-hand and the song wrote itself.

5. Wonder (David Francey) 3:27 Lyrics

Vocals: David Francey
Guitar, backing vocals: Kieran Kane
Bouzouki: Richard Bennett
Accordion: Fats Kaplin
Drums: Lucas Kane

There are moments in life when you find yourself wondering about what might have been. This is a song about one of those rare moments.

6. Blue Heart of Texas (David Francey) 2:44 Lyrics

Vocals: David Francey
Guitar: Kieran Kane
Fiddle: Fats Kaplin
Drums: Lucas Kane

I spend a lot of time on the road where there is a lot of distance to get lost in. You know you’re lost when the hotel room feels like home.

7. Just the Same (David Francey) 2:10 Lyrics

Vocals: David Francey
Drum, backing vocals: Kieran Kane
Guitar: Richard Bennett
Fiddle: Fats Kaplin
Drums: Lucas Kane

A girlfriend at the time, spotlit by the streetlight in the parking lot behind the restaurant we both worked at. It was a memorable image and it led to this song years later.

8. Borderlands (David Francey and Lori Watson) 1:16 Lyrics

Vocals David Francey

I co-wrote this song with Lori Watson, a wonderful musician from the Borders in Scotland. We met at the Songwriters’ House, Celtic Colours Festival, Baddeck, Cape Breton.  A celebration of a winter’s day.

9. High Wall (David Francey) 2:46 Lyrics

Vocals: David Francey
Electric guitar: Kieran Kane

The most difficult obstacles I have to overcome in life are usually of my own making.

10. I Live in Fear (David Francey and Kieran Kane) 2:36 Lyrics

Vocals: David Francey
Banjo, backing vocals: Kieran Kane
Electric guitar: Fats Kaplin
Drums: Lucas Kane

Written with Kieran Kane.  “I Live in Fear” pays homage to renowned Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and his black and white 1950s film of the same name. Both the movie and the song are an appeal for dignity.

11. Long Brown Hair (David Francey) 2:04 Lyrics

Vocals: David Francey
Banjo: Kieran Kane
Guitar: Richard Bennett
Mandolin: Fats Kaplin
Drums: Lucas Kane

A song about the dissolution of a marriage or the solution to that marriage, depending on your point of view.

12. Grateful (David Francey) 2:05 Lyrics

Vocals:  David Francey
Guitar:  Kieran Kane
Mandolin:  Fats Kaplin
Drums:  Lucas Kane

A love song for Beth, in gratitude.

Thanks

I owe a great debt of thanks to the musicians who played on this CD. It was a pleasure and an honour to share a studio with people who showed such generosity of spirit, talent and humour. Many thanks to Kieran Kane, for his inspiration, talent, friendship and drive. Thanks to Kieran and Lori Watson for writing with me. Charles Yingling was a treat to work with, and very much a part of the band, albeit from behind the glass.
Once again, I thank Ian MacGregor for his friendship and support.  Thanks to road warrior and musical friend Craig Werth.
Special thanks to three hard-working and friendly folks – our manager, Mark Watson, booking agent, Ryan Heerschap and lovely office assistant, Marilyn Barnett.
To my wife Beth Girdler, my constant and my joy, I give my love and thanks. I am grateful for the unwavering support of my family. My children Amy, Julia and Colin make me laugh at myself and at the world, just when I most need to.
To friends and fans around the world, thank you each and every one.
This album is dedicated to my Ma, Marion Francey, for her determination to keep marching. It inspires me to do the same.
